Minimum-Weight Exact Red–Blue Bipartite Perfect Matching → Integral Minimum-Cost Flow Complexity open
Unsolved
Why this question matters
High: the 2026 assignment paper shows this problem subsumes several upgraded assignment and scheduling extensions. A positive reduction would also settle deterministic exact-color matching on bipartite graphs.
The ICALP 2026 Multiplicative Assignment with Upgrades paper, Section 5.2, explicitly leaves the binary-weight exact red-blue minimum-weight perfect matching optimization problem unresolved, while solving a structured complete-graph upgrade case in strongly polynomial time.
The reduction to construct
Input is an explicitly listed bipartite graph with equal left and right vertex counts, red/blue edge colors, binary nonnegative integer edge weights, and binary k. Outputs are all perfect matchings containing exactly k red edges and having minimum total weight among those, or NO-SOLUTION if none exists.
Input is a directed network with integral capacities, binary rational costs and node balances. Outputs are all integral feasible flows of minimum total cost, or NO-SOLUTION if infeasible.
Find deterministic polynomial-time F and G such that every optimal flow decodes to a minimum-weight perfect matching with exactly k red edges, preserving infeasibility. This would give a deterministic polynomial algorithm for the stated exact optimization problem.
High: exact red cardinality destroys the simple integral assignment-polytope description. Existing randomized algebraic methods and pseudopolynomial weight algorithms do not supply a compact deterministic flow network for binary weights.
What a complete answer must include
Provide deterministic polynomial-time F and G with bit-size bounds. Prove correctness for every legal input and every valid target output, including NO-SOLUTION where defined; independently check recovered answers on representative instances. A generic SAT or ILP encoding alone does not meet the novelty goal.

The unweighted randomized exact-matching algorithm and pseudo-polynomial weighted algorithm do not imply this deterministic binary-weight claim. Gate 5 route: seek an integral extended flow description using alternating-cycle exchanges and a compact state for red count; the missing theorem is that all low-cost exchanges can be represented without exponentially many states.
